Benchmark indices opened higher taking cues from their Asian peers. Among individual stocks, Vedanta was trading 5 per cent higher as the National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Saturday dismissed Tamil Nadu government's decision to close company's Sterlite copper plant in Tuticorin. The court, however, directed Vedanta to deposit Rs 250 million as a token amount for their failures and asked the company to spend Rs 1 billion within a period of three years for the welfare of the inhabitants in the area. Sectorally, metal stocks gained the most, followed by pharma and financial services counters. In the broader market, the small-cap and midcap indices were trading in line with the benchmarks. The S&P BSE MidCap was trading 75 points or 0.49 per cent higher at 15,268, while the S&P BSE SmallCap index was trading at 14,525, up 23.66 points or 0.16 per cent.
